چکیده

In this paper, we adopt the more and more accepted view that future inter-networks will consist of a rich and diverse collection of networks with multiple and potentially incompatible namespaces. In contrast to today’s Internet, there would not exist a single global namespace federating all the networks. The main design challenge in such a catenet is to offer global connectivity over a heterogeneous environmentwithout having to design dedicated translation and resolution mechanisms between all possible network-pairs. In this context, “inter-network routing” implies that given a certain destination name or address, one has to find the corresponding network among “the sea of networks” that compose the catenet. In this paper, we describe a strawman design for performing universal inter-network routing: our generic solution is based on self-classifying names using Unix regular expressions to both advertise and enable “namespace patterns” lookup across a heterogeneous internetwork.

Thoughts on a New Namespace

This working paper describes a possible design for a new Internet namespace. A primary goal of creating this new namespace is to use the new namespace as a non-topological network-layer identifier for hosts. By doing so, a number of current routing issues, particularly those related to mobile hosts and to multi-homed campuses become simpler to solve. As this is a working paper, there is also di...

A Plug & Play, Scalable, Robust and Namespace Independent Virtual Id ROuting for Future Networks

In this work we propose VIRO — a novel, “plug-&play” virtual identifier (Id) routing paradigm for future networks. The objective is three-fold. First, VIRO directly addresses the challenges faced by the traditional layer-2 technologies such as Ethernet, while retaining its “plug-&-play” feature. Second, it provides a uniform convergence layer that integrates and unifies routing and forwarding p...

A Revised Overview of the Identifier-Locator Network Protocol (ILNP)

This document provides an overview of the Identifier-Locator Network Protocol (ILNP), using the Internet Protocol, Version 6 (IPv6) as a reference point. The key difference between ILNP and IP is that the IP Address is replaced by two distinct namespaces. The new Identifier namespace is used only for the identity of a given ILNP node. The new Locator namespace is used only for routing packets t...

A New Addressing and Forwarding Architecture for Internet

The current Internet routing and addressing architecture is facing a serious scalability problem. The default free zone (DFZ) routing table size grows at an increasing and potentially alarming rate. The Internet architecture uses a single namespace the IP address, to express two functions about a network entity: its identifier and locator. This overloading of semantics leads to the scalability ...
